Calima by Anna Borràs (ES/SE) | 15.11.2026 | 16:00 | Performance
“Calima” is a choreographic investigation of Saharan dust storms that travel across borders and oceans, carried from North Africa towards the Canary Islands and beyond.
Calima transforms the landscape into a suspended environment. The horizon disappears, visibility is reduced, and the air becomes thick with particles of earth. The work also draws on the haboob, a powerful wind-driven dust storm that lifts vast amounts of earth into the atmosphere. If the haboob is the force that sets the dust in motion, calima is the atmospheric condition that follows: less an explosion or storm than an atmosphere that surrounds and enters the body.
At the centre of Calima is breath — breath under pressure, interrupted breath, shared breath. The air is no longer neutral. It becomes dense, visible and charged with particles in transit. Each inhalation becomes an encounter with distance: Sahara carried into skin, lungs and memory. The body becomes a temporary archive of what passes through it.
The choreography emerges from this fragile relationship between body and air. Movement responds to breath as it expands, resists and shortens under changing atmospheric density. The bodies are not simply placed within calima; they are continuously shaped by it. Sound and light extend this breathing environment, creating an unstable perceptual field where air, image and body become inseparable.
At its core, Calima asks: how do we remain together when breath is compromised? When visibility fades, breath becomes a shared condition — an invisible thread connecting bodies in space.
Calima is both material and metaphor: an atmosphere in constant movement, entering and leaving the body. A shared field where choreography is not only seen, but breathed; where movement emerges from density, limitation and the fragile persistence of breath.
