“The third room” is a choreographic work by Kiruna-born dancer and choreographer Marcus Baldemar, exploring identity, desire, language, and belonging. Building on his work Sex and Tornedalen, the piece moves through the northern borderland of Tornedalen, where tradition, sensuality, and identity meet in a space that is both familiar and foreign.
Through movement and performance, Baldemar creates a soft but political disruption of restrictive norms, inviting questions about the body, cultural belonging, and who gets to define identity.
Marcus Baldemar: The third room
“The Third Room” takes its point of departure from Baldemar’s latest choreographic work, Sex and Tornedalen (2024/2025). A character moves through a northern borderland. They carry out a work that provokes, aches, and resists. Between Europe and Tornedalen, a stage emerges where desire, tradition, and identity cautiously wrestle with one another. A place both familiar and foreign. The work is an embodied disruption: sensual, political, and emotional. A choreography of soft defiance in the face of contrasting and restrictive norms.
About the artist
Marcus Baldemar is a dancer and choreographer from Kiruna, Sweden, based in Stockholm. His practice moves between dance, choreography, performance, and education, with a particular interest in the body as a site for identity, language, desire, and belonging.
Baldemar studied at Balettakademien in Umeå, Sweden, SEAD in Salzburg, Austria, and P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels, Belgium. He works nationally and internationally as a dancer, choreographer, and educator. As a performer, he has collaborated with artists including Hagar Malin Hellkvist Sellén, Ludvig Daae, David Zambrano, Rui Horta,
and Daniel Linehan.
As a choreographer, Baldemar creates works for both adult and young audiences. His work often explores questions of identity, sexuality, language, and cultural belonging through movement and performance. Selected choreographic works include GALDR (2019), Polari Speaking Sex (2021), Finally Fantastic (2022), and Sex and Tornedalen / Seksi ja Tornionlaakso (2024/25).
