Deborah Hay | Workshop “Into the Hinterland”
What removes my limitations as a dancer, performer, and choreographer is when I perceive time and space as unknowable. The humor, awe, curiosity, and gratitude this invokes is my dance. I hope to support your dance, your performance, and your choreography from this perspective.

*The participation fee includes access to the workshop, lecture, and performance, as well as accommodation for a limited number of participants. Please note that once the accommodation at Vitlycke-CPA is fully booked, we will no longer be able to host participants on site. In this case, you will need to arrange your own accommodation nearby, and your participation fee will be reduced by approximately €50.

Deborah Hay (US)
Choreographer/performer Deborah Hay began her career in the early 1960’s with the Judson Dance Theatre. In her five decades at the vanguard of choreographic experimentation, she has helped re-define the field of dance with her revolutionary work and influential books, Lamb at the Altar, 1991, Duke University Press, and My Body, the Buddhist, 2001, and Using the Sky, 2019, Wesleyan University Press. She is one of the 21 American performing artists to receive the inaugural and groundbreaking 2012 Doris Duke Artist Award. May 5, 2015 France’s Minister of Culture and Communication awarded Hay the title of CHEVALIER DE L’ORDRE DES ARTS ET DES LETTRES. Tanz Im August 2019 presented RE-Perspective covering Hay’s work from 1968 to the present and in 2021/22 Mercat de les Flor in Barcelona presented a retrospective of her work.

TOWARDS:2025
This workshop is organised in the framework of TOWARDS:2026, a cycle of intensive workshops organised by Vitlycke – Centre for Performing Arts (Sweden) that includes physical praxis, evening lectures, video screenings, and live performances. It’s the metaphor of aiming at something – to expose and engage ourselves in physical investigations and conceptual challenges that can foster creativity and encourage discoveries. TOWARDS:2026 see pedagogy as a continuous intellectual provocation, an occasion for inspiration through paradoxes and awakenings and as a desire to overturn common sense and question what we have learned.

Over the years, TOWARDS: has welcomed an outstanding list of artists and choreographers, including Julyen Hamilton, German Jauregui Allu, Judith Sanchez Ruiz, Frey Faust, Laura Aris, David Zambrano, Francesco Scavetta, and Xavier le Roy & Scarlet Yu. This year, the TOWARDS program began with a series of workshops led by two renowned voices in the contemporary dance field: Meg Stuart (US/BE/DE) and Guy Cools (CA/BE).
